Catalog and internet sales continue to outpace the overall retail market and convenience is the leading reason for that growth. That convenience is particularly evident when a buyer can purchase gifts and directly ship the gift to its recipient. For that reason, gifting has increasingly received more attention in direct marketing circles.

While more focus has been placed on gifting, the surrounding accessories such as messaging have proven to be burdensome. When a consumer physically purchases and ships a gift offline, they typically include a greeting card. They go to the store where they have many choices of greeting cards and select one depending upon the occasion, the gift, the buyer's taste and the recipient's personality.

In 2001, over $7 billion worth of greeting cards will be purchased in the United States. While the "e-card" has its place, numerous studies have shown that people overwhelmingly prefer real paper greeting cards, and real greeting card sales continue to grow, (and you can't put an e-card in the box with the gift!). What they both have in common is visually pleasing artwork and a sentiment. The sentiment is critical in helping buyers convey their message and that is why almost all the cards sold include a printed sentiment.
